We´ve Come a Long Way, Baby

In October 2007 two desperados started an oufit they called SID. No money, no friends, just some big ideas and a little grit.

According to the November 2010 Luxembourg Staff Committee election results, SID had become number three among the six competing unions. That is what we achieved in a little over three years.

Starting in late 2009, SID tried to persuade all save for the largest Luxembourg Commission unions to form a joint list. Two of them declined; one went from zero to zero mandates, the other from seven down to two. Together with FFPE and U4U, SID formed a joint list called "Vote the Change" which got one place on the Staff Committee, something none of its components have achieved in living memory.

SID was the biggest contributor to VtC result; its candidates polled 2 343 of the total 4 774 votes. In some ways SID is the most radical among the three VtC unions. It is also remarkable that one of the most radical and controversial candidates on the VtC list scored highest of all and entered the Staff Committee.

What sets SID apart from other unions is that it does not sign the Framework Agreement with the Commission. One problem is that this Agreement does not provide for enough internal democracy to satisfy SID's aspirations. Another serious issue is that it provides for various subsidies to go to signatory unions in kind, in services and even in cash. Accepting money from the bosses is something that SID is uncomfortable with.

(Note that in Germany, for one, it is illegal for a labour union to accept money from employers. This is to keep the two sides mutually independent.)

There are some disadvantages to SID's emphasis on real independence. One is that those unions who sign the Framework Agreement simply get more resources and could therefore do more things, provided that they are not afraid to offend one of their major sources of funding. Whether their relatively moderate stance has something to do with their gratitude remains a matter of speculation. Another price for us to pay is that the 2 343 votes which we received do not make us a "representative union" in the sense of the Framework Agreement, precisely because we refuse to sign it. Even with ten times more votes, we would not count as representative. Our voters need not worry; a vote for SID has at least as much impact as one for a more established, subsidized union. Maybe more.

By Christmas 2010 our site had 1.4 m i l l i o n page-views. That was despite several resets which we had to make in the early days because of technical problems.

It is more than just numbers. We have readers on all continents, except Antarctica. Understandibly, corporations and even governments check us out. More pleasing for us; we are read by people in all kinds of educational and research institutions;

It would have been unrealistic to expect SID to jump from nothing to first place in just three years. The results so far are encouraging enough to motivate us for 2011-2013.

Given our modest size, we will need to concentrate not absolutely all, but most of our resources on three urgent issues; defending the Method, helping Contract Agents get at least some of their rights and working towards a Staff Committee for Retirees. We will do a little more when we get the chance, of course. But if you, dear reader, want SID to do a lot more, you will have to get involved with its work.

Last, not least; thanks to all the people who worked to make our success (both VtC and SID) possible; voters, friends, members, candidates. Let's see how much more we can achieve in the next three years of SID. As you see, our efforts are beginning to have an effect.
