Don't Count on Retiring at 67

The Commission is circulating some bizarre proposals on temporarily half re-hiring some of its retired staff. See Draft Contract, What DGs are Looking For. There is no time for a deep analysis, but several inconsistencies strike us.

The first one is that the Commission continues to insist on summarily forcing everyone into retirement at the age of 67, no matter how fit and motivated they may be. Then it whirls around 180 degrees and wants to re-hire some of the same people it pushed out the door. In this way it could keep all the choices to be made in its hands; employees are to have no choice about working longer while the bosses pick and choose whom they will grace with one more contract. This attitude is familiar, but not fair.

Even worse; the Commission has put forward the proposal to cut 5% (circa 2 000) posts from the establishment plan, as though one in twenty among us is twiddling their thumbs while looking out the window. Then it spins 180 degrees around and start hunting for more staff. That brings a question to mind. Is the European public service overstaffed or understaffed? It can't be both!

This writer has argued against firing people as birthday present and he will continue to do so. But he is not willing to work on under just any conditions. If the 2 000 jobs are cut from the establishment plan, he will take that as practical proof that the Commission was overstaffed and needed to eliminate some dead weight. Should the Disappointing Authority attempt to "reactivate" him via some weird post-employment contract, they will be contemplating a frozen shoulder.
