Hangmen and other Cowards

A bit before noon on the 9th of May one of our members had a feeling that he should check the www for news of Farzad Kamangar and Shirin Alam Houli. We thus discovered that what we had dreaded for over two years had taken place. "Our" two prisoners, together with Ali Haydarian, Farhad Vakili, and Mehdi Eslamian had been hanged.

What to think, what to write?

According to the official publications the five Kurds had to die because of their deep involvement in a long list of terrible terroristic crimes. If so much evidence was available, why was Farzad Kamangar sentenced to death in less than five minutes? Do Tehran court stenographers record the proceedings at a rate of a million syllables a minute? If that evidence existed, it would already have been published. Under the mullahs being a literate, independently thinking Kurd is reason enough to hang.

Messages smuggled from prison confirm serious abuse in custody, including sexual misconduct. As much as the Iranian government rails against Abu Ghraib , Guantanamo and just about any prison in Israel, its words are worthlessly hypocritical because it commits the same crimes against humanity. Not that this would excuse other crimes committed in the name of our wonderful Western values.

The mountains of Kurdistan are strategically important. In its folly, the Tehran regime is trying to terrorize the Kurds into being loyal. A lot of governments have tried that. Hasn't worked yet. Last President to experiment with this approach wound up on the business end of a rope.

Human life is very finite, and the hangmen will soon enough die in their turn. Let us hope that they do not live long enough to see the end of their regime. If they were captured alive we would face a daunting dilemma. To kill those who are alone, unarmed, whose hands are manacled and whose heads are hooded is cruel and cowardly. Remember what Melchior Rodrigues (references: 1 , 2) , who spent many years in prison, sometimes as the director, sometimes as an inmate, said; "You can die for your ideals, but you cannot kill for them."
