From Cairo to Brussels

For still more information on the Egyptian revolution than you are already being bombarded with, see
Labourstart , and BBC .

To show solidarity with our Egyptian colleagues go here and sign. The Egyptians in Tahrir Square and elsewhere are reaching by providing us in Europe with a very positive example to follow. We should learn from them.

True, the standard of living in the EU is substantially higher than in Egypt and most European governments respect fundamental rights and democratic principles more than Mr Mubarak's regime did.

However, the decisions taken by the EU's political class condemn us and our descendents to a declining level of available income. Some of the money that you used to receive for your work, be it called a salary or a pension, is now needed to pay off the accumulated gambling debts of the upper 2%. (Reminder; 2% of the human race own 50% of the wealth , so you will be facing cuts to your income, unless you are one of the super rich. In that case your income will be boosted by the crisis.)

After less than two weeks of active resistance, the Egyptian government offered a 15% salary increase to the public service workers, no doubt with a view to buying them off. We here in the EU public service are threatened with substantial cuts in 2012, possibly even in excess of 15%.

If the current trend of European apathy and Egyptian militancy continues long enough, our Egyptian colleagues will one day out-earn us.

This need not happen. Europeans are just as able to resist and even fight back actively as the Egyptians. We need one more ingredient; will.
